Funded in the context of the European Union Seventh Framework Programme, the EMERALD project addresses energy use optimization and the seamless integration of the FEV into the transport and energy infrastructure, by delivering clear advances over the state-of-the-art. The project is running in the context of the Green Cars European Public Private Partnership (continuing into H2020 as European Green Vehicles PPP, and its goal is to assist the FEV in becoming a successful commercial product.

To achieve this, the EMERALD project will innovate a range of advanced functionalities and solutions targeted for efficient vehicle energy management as well as for effective integration with the grid, with cooperative transport infrastructures and with fleet management and planning systems.

These novel functionalities are:

  • Energy-driven management of FEV auxiliaries
  • Energy-efficient long-range route planning and optimization
  • Performance-centric machine learning for consumption prediction
  • Driver profiling data collection
  • Data synchronization using power-line communications
  • User-centric charge and discharge management
  • Enhanced power demand prediction and power flow management support
  • Cooperative FEV fleet management
  • FEV-oriented driver training

EMERALD represents an extraordinary opportunity to introduce new concepts and innovate new technologies to:

  • Forward the existing state-of-the-art
  • Reinforce Europe’s world-leading position in electric road transportation, cooperative traffic and fleet management, and FEVs’ integration with the power grid
  • Move European economy towards a greener, knowledge-based, technology-powered, and information-driven digital economy

EMERALD project is part-funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Program, Cooperation ICT, Grant Agreement No. 314151. The project started on 1st October 2012 and will run for 45 months.
